Letter and receipt, 1861 and 1865.

On 11 December 1861, Beaver wrote to Rebecca Valentine, Bellefonte, Pa., from Fort Seward (formerly Fort Beauregard), near Port Royal, South Carolina, during the Civil War. He writes of the beauty of the South Carolina coast, a pleasant dream about her, and scant news of the war. Includes a typed transcript. On 27 May 1865, Lewis H. Stout, Secretary to the Commissioners, wrote a note from the Pennsylvania Surveyor General's office, Harrisburg, to the administrators of the estate of James T. Hale enclosing eight land scrips [not attached] donated by Congress to Pennsylvania for the support of agricultural colleges and requested a receipt. James A. Beaver signed the receipt, 21 November 1865, noting he was forwarding the scrips to Stephen Miller, Minnesota. A two cent bank check revenue stamp is attached.
